State of Movie Night 2026
A Video Vault Research Report · visitvideovault.com
Movie night should be the easy part of the evening.
Instead, many of us open Netflix, switch to Hulu, check Prime, scroll for twenty minutes, debate a few options, and finally settle — or give up altogether.
Before building Video Vault, we wanted to understand whether this experience was common. We surveyed 80 movie lovers, and the results revealed a surprisingly consistent picture of modern movie night.
Who We Talked To
The Issue
More streaming services. Harder to find something to watch.
Participants weren’t running out of things to watch. They were running out of patience to find them. The problem isn’t access — it’s the decision.
What People Want
What People Told Us They Actually Want
Multiple selections allowed. The answers described a consistent set of needs — and mapped almost directly to what Video Vault is building.

Video Vault wasn’t built from assumptions.
Every major feature in Video Vault exists because someone in this survey described a real frustration. Here’s what they told us — and how we responded.
What We Learned
The survey confirmed something we had suspected — but it also challenged us to think differently.
Movie lovers aren’t asking for more content.
- Better guidance.
- More meaningful choices.
- A system that remembers what matters.
- Recommendations that understand context — not just viewing history.

We’re not trying to reinvent movie night.
We’re trying to make it enjoyable again.
“I do this thing where I scroll for twenty minutes, get overwhelmed and put on the same comfort movie I have seen nine times already. Blockbuster actually forced me to choose something new because I had to walk around and read the boxes. Now the algorithm just feeds me more of the same and it feels like work to break out of that.”
